Storing wood

Store firewood and string it well.

Now you've bought dry, healthy wood. You are well on your way to a warm winter. It is now your responsibility to take the proper steps to ensure that the wood is still dry when it is time to use it. Over the years, we've seen firewood stored improperly, resulting in poor performance. That's why we've created this page to give you some advice on this subject.

The first question to ask is whether you want to store your wood indoors or outdoors. Before making a decision, there are two factors to consider.

First, it is essential to contact your city or municipality to find out what the regulations are. Although many people are unaware of it, there are often by-laws that limit the amount of wood a citizen can store in their home. The purpose of these regulations is to reduce the risk of fire and to facilitate the work of firefighters should a fire occur.

Once you know how much cord you are allowed to store in your home, you need to evaluate how much cord you can store. If this is not the first year you have brought wood inside, you already know how much space you have. We can provide you with 48'' high x 96'' long x 15'' deep cords.  We can also provide you with 12'' and 14''.

Indoor storage

The best place to string firewood is in the basement. And where do you think the humidity is highest in your home? Yes, it's the basement! It is essential to install a dehumidifier in the room where your stored firewood is located. Models with a drain that allows for continuous water discharge are preferred as they run continuously and do not need to be drained.

Once you start using your heating appliance, a dehumidifier may no longer be necessary if the wood is in the same room as the appliance. For obvious safety reasons, be sure to keep enough space between the wood being stored and the heating unit.

Outdoor storage

It is safer to store wood outdoors. However, there are several precautions to take to ensure that it will be dry when the time comes to use it.

String upon delivery
It is essential to string the wood as soon as you receive it. Covering a pile of wood that has just been delivered with a tarp for more than a few days is a way of doing things that must absolutely be avoided.

Leave a distance between the strings
It is important to leave a distance between the cords so that air can circulate freely. A spacing of 12 inches is sufficient.

String wood on pallets
Firewood should not be strung directly on the ground. There absolutely must be a few inches between the ground and the wood. Using pallets is the easiest way to achieve this goal. Most big box stores are inundated with pallets until they don't know what to do with them. Often, the pallets are placed at the side of the road. All you have to do is pick them up. If not, ask your storekeeper to put some aside for you.

Cover the wood properly
The wood should only be covered on top because the air must circulate freely on the sides. We insist on this point because it is the most common mistake made.

Choose the right location
Each lot has its own particularities. As a homeowner, you know better than anyone else where the most sunlight falls on your property. Firewood should be corded there.
